We have really excellent and exciting news for all who care about protecting our precious wetlands and waterways here in Port Franks!
Many of you have come out to volunteer your time and efforts in the fight against Phragmites, most recently on L Lake. Thank you! The area we worked on is looking great, with just a bit of new growth to take care of.
This morning, Eric Cleland (Director, Invasive Species Program) and Jill Crosswaite (Conservation biology coordinator) of Nature Conservancy Canada along with Nathan Schoelier (Stewardship Technician) of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority met with our own Nancy Vidler of the Lambton Shores Phragmites Community Group here in Port Franks. The area north of L Lake all the way to the municipal drain at Superior Street was toured and assessed to see what can be done about the infestation of invasive Phragmites. The really good news is that low water levels mean that real inroads can be made to eradicate the invasive Phragmites – and plans are in motion! Stay tuned – work begins in August!

Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is an independent, corporate body established, in 1946, under the Conservation Authorities Act in Ontario, thanks to the vision of local municipalities and the need for some programs to be delivered on a watershed basis.
The Lambton Shores Phragmites Community Group was begun right here in Port Franks in 2012 when invasive Phragmites was discovered growing on our beach. Since then, the group has been responsible for projects all along the Lambton Shores shoreline.
